Let’s face it – the news out there these days is pretty depressing. The combination of tough times and the media’s propensity for sensationalism and exploitation combine to make a steady stream of less than cheerful headlines. So, unless you are completely out of touch with the world beyond your window or are made of some sort of emotional “Teflon” it is hard not to be effected by the daily onslaught of bad news. A couple of days ago – I felt that I had reached my saturation point – and was feeling a little low.  So, I posted on my Facebook page – that I needed some good news and lo and behold – I got some. From little reminders that the weekend was here, to posts about friend’s children, pets, simple bits of gratitude and little praises – my friend’s rose to the challenge. And I was reminded of two important things…

First. though we cannot deny that there is a lot of negative stuff out there – the fact is that there is a lot of positive, too. Though news programs may save the “human interest – feel good” pieces for the end of the broadcast – the reality is that there is a lot out there to be grateful for you just have to tune your vision to see it. It’s easy to get bogged down in the negative and quite frankly it should not be ignored – but finding a balance is very important to keep your head straight and your energy up to deal with all of “life’s news”.

And second, don’t underestimate the caring of friends and the kindness of strangers. There are a lot of good people out there who are more than happy to respond when you need a hand. It may not seem like a lot to do – to post a good thought on the Facebook of an old friend but small gestures can mean a lot. And don’t underestimate the capacity for these same people and others like them to offer grand gestures as well. There is a lot of good out there – allow yourself the opportunity to ask for help when you need it – and enjoy the beauty of people’s capacity to give to one another in this world where greed gets the headlines and warmth is the afterthought. Maybe some day – the tables will be turned.

Thursday morning, the start of a new work day, at least for some of us, because after all in this time of economic nightmares a lot of good, hard-working folks don’t have a job to wake up to no matter what day of the week it is. And while some folks are able to rise and shine – shower and shave, coffee and breakfast and migrate to their workspace with a spring in their step, many others are dragging themselves from their slumber and laboring through their morning rituals to begin the day. These are tough times whether you are employed or not – budgets are tight, prospects are dim and spirits are broken. For many who are lucky enough to have a job, there looms a sense of being trapped in a place that isn’t working for them. There’s a lot of fear out there, fear of losing what little stability you have – and risking letting go of the devil you know.

Some people I know actually love their jobs. Whether working for themselves or for someone else  – they are happy to be where they are. Others are un-employed, and their job is looking for a job – a tedious, exhausting and financially draining experience, particularly now. And a third group are unhappily employed – showing up each day to jobs that they hate – but too afraid and too risk-adverse to look for something different. “You’re lucky to have work” – is the overarching sentiment in this world. To which the answer is “yeah, but…”.

Most of us, spend most of our time at our jobs, the majority of our hours each week spent plying our trade and trying to collect the needed funds to live the rest of our lives. What a shame it is – that so many people would rather be somewhere else. So many hours, days, weeks, months and years spent doing something, being somewhere that you really don’t want to be. And if that were it – the extent of the negative spin on time spent in “the wrong job” – that would be bad enough – but the reality is that all those hours spent being un-satisfied, under-stimulated, under-valued and just unhappy put a drain on the rest of our lives.

So, what do you do? I suppose the best possible option has a two-fold component to it. For one, for now, you keep showing-up and try your hardest to make the best of the work you do have. Take pride in yourself for doing what you have to do – to keep things moving along – even if the situation is less than ideal. But at the same time – try to find something else that is a better fit. Yes, opportunity isn’t exactly glutting the market at the moment – but you have to do what you can to improve your situation. Find the moments that are available to you to explore new positions or create your own. Your life is too precious, and your time too valuable to deny yourself a sense of happiness and satisfaction. Start small, don’t push yourself to a state of exhaustion – but keep the light burning ’cause somewhere out there a better circumstance is waiting for what you can bring to it.
