As I sit here pondering the topic for today’s blog, I find myself reviewing all of the things that are present and active for me in my life at the moment since I find that that is often the best grist for the mill. That made me think about a concept that I am finding rather interesting, which is; at any given point in time each of us is surrounded by not only our physical place in time but our “mental atmosphere” as well. The mental atmosphere takes in all that is current and active in our life at each point. It is comprised not just of our thoughts and feelings but of our internalization of the current events in our lives and our processes and recollections of all the things that are triggered in us by circumstances of our days. There are a lot of constants – things that we think about on an ongoing basis and then there are the more temporal pieces that come and go in our consciousness because of events that take place outside of us.

As an example here are a few of the things in my mental atmosphere at present; my beloved nephew’s impending wedding and my wonderings about how I will be able to make the long trip to Georgia to be present for it, the unpleasant awareness that at 5:00 in this morning I discovered my hot water heater is broken and my thoughts about how/when I will arrange to have it fixed, a course on Appreciative Inquiry that I am taking which stirs my curiosity and resonates quite strongly with how my thinking has been moving as late, my sons and how things are going for each of them in their own lives right now, just to name a few of the elements. Some of these things (my thoughts about my boys) are ongoing fixtures in mind while others have a more temporary quality. Some are rather mundane though not necessarily unimportant (the water heater) while others are more significant (my nephew’s wedding) and others have a strong “intellectual” component and the possibility of impacting the “language of my world view” (the course). A week ago, my mental atmosphere was different, though it did still contain some of the same elements.

How we interact with these things in our atmosphere, what feelings we associate with each “event”, how much mental energy we expend on each item, how our thoughts about what control and impact we have in each area, what actions we decide to take, what thoughts and ideas are spawned, how each area interacts with the others are the pieces that make up our experience every day. At any given point in time our atmosphere is in a state of flux and how we decide to move with it is what makes up our experience of our everyday lives. If you could break down your atmosphere into a list of the elements that are occupying your life right now what would it look like? Would you make a choice to shift your awareness from one element to another, are there items you want to add or subtract? Just as your physical atmosphere effects your day in very real and tangible ways, your mental atmosphere has at least as much impact. What are the elements of your world today?

As I sit here pondering where I want to go with this blog today, my mind is a pulling in many directions, and despite my efforts to land in several other seemingly more interesting thoughts, I keep coming back to the same place. I am finding my thoughts keep landing on the fact that it is Monday, and a new week is beginning. There is always the temptation to think, “Ah yes, Mondays, I know what these look like”, but the reality is that no two moments are ever identical. There will be routines and familiarity in the tasks that I confront but every moment is brand new, each second providing the opportunity for something different to happen.

I think we forget about that sometimes. There is such a strong tendency to pull familiar things together so that we can know and regulate and master our moments that I think we often miss the opportunity that is present at all moments. There is a necessary efficiency which comes with routine and similarity, a parsing out of our limited resources that allows us to conserve our energy for the big stuff and just sleep walk through the daily bits, but I wonder if we are wasting it. I wonder if, we were more engaged and present as we move through our days and tackle both the mundane repetitive tasks and the new experiences if life wouldn’t be just a little bit more interesting.

I am definitely drawn to novelty, and though I find comfort in the familiar, I prefer the challenge of the new. Nonetheless, I am grateful for the present, the known, the awareness of what I do have and the comfort in what I know. I think what I am really after here to the extent that it is possible is the idea of being present in the moment. To not take the moments of my day for granted even if they seem like I have lived them before, because every second is unique. Being mindful, aware and present provides the opportunity to see things as we never have before. So, yes, it is another Monday, but we have never had this one before…

Shhh, don’t think, just listen… January 11, 2010

Intuition;  is like any of the other senses. Often referred to as the “sixth sense”it  is just one of the many ways available to us to observe and interact with the world around us. Just as you know you are looking at a horse when one stands in front of you, intuition provides a sense of knowing and understanding that appears to be accessing information that is not readily available to our other senses.
For many of us, our intuition is easily accessed, providing a ready stream of information that feels as real and reliable as the information we get through our other senses of sight, hearing, etc. But for others it is almost completely inactive and unnoticed, unrecognized when it is at work and underutilized as the resource it is. Despite this, I do believe that it is present all the same, it just requires some concerted effort to access. For the folks that are less attuned to their own intuition, I believe that they just need a little extra help in tapping into it – like glasses or a hearing aid for this less tangible sense of intuition.
There is a lot of useful information out there about accessing your intuition, and I will talk more about this topic at a later date (because I believe it to be extremely important in creating a life that resonates with your true self) – but for now, I just want to start with what I believe is the first and most simple step: awareness. In order to hear what your intuition is telling you – you have to make a conscious effort to listen to it. It requires you to quiet your mind for a moment and to go a bit deeper into yourself so that you can “listen” to what it is telling you. You know when people ask you – “What does your gut, tell you?” or “What do you think in your heart-of-hearts?” That’s it. That’s all it is – it is that sense inside yourself of what your REALLY know.
The great thing is – the more you listen to it – the more you realize it has to tell you. So, I’ll be quiet for now – you take a moment to listen to what you are saying to yourself instead…
